Apocromatele sunt refractoare cu un design de lentile care unește minim trei culori într-un punct focal comun. În acest fel, aberația cromatică tipică telescoapelor refractoare este suprimată. Fără această corecție, obiectele luminoase, cum ar fi Luna sau planetele, au borduri de coloare deranjante.

Refractoarele sunt telescoape al căror obiectiv este alcătuit din una sau mai multe lentile din sticlă. Această lentilă refractă lumina într-un punct focal. Poziția exactă a punctului focal depinde însă de lungimea de undă (culoarea) luminii. Astfel apare o aberație cromatică care devine vizibil ca bordură colorată în jurul obiectelor luminoase. În fizică, această relația de dependență a refracției de lungimea de undă este cunoscută sub denumirea de dispersie.
Nu există o definiție cu adevărat precisă a termenului apocromat. Cele mai multe apocromate dispun de obiective cu două lentile, la care este utilizată o sticlă specială. Această așa-numită sticlă ED dispune de o dispersie deosebit de scăzută (prescurtarea ED vine de la Extra low Dispersion). Apocromatele ED furnizează o imagine care în mare parte are culori curate.
O imagine și mai clară este furnizată de obiectivele cu trei sau patru lentile. Aceste apocromate sunt cunoscute ca triplet sau cvadruplet. În ceea ce privește puritatea culorilor pot concura cu o optică cu oglinzi.
